Additional Details:
I truly enjoyed being stationed at NS Mayport. There is a great beach on the base that is right behind the barracks. I also lived out in town while stationed there and easily found a very nice and affordable apartment that was not only 10 minutes away from base but also only 10 minutes away from Jax beach. NS Mayport is an excellent duty station choice for seafood lovers as there is a famous seafood place (Singletons Seafood Shack) right there behind the base in historic Mayport. They park their fishing boats on the pier out the back of the restaurant so it does not get much fresher than that. With Jacksonville being such a large city, there is always something to do. The historic city of St. Augustine is a short drive away and makes for a great weekend getaway. If theme parks are your thing, the base is only a few hours away from Orlando where you can go to Disney and/or Universal Studios. The space coast is only a couple hours to the south for you to watch a rocket launch, spend the weekend partying in Miami, or take some leave and drive down to the Florida keys. Take a trip up to Georgia or the Carolinas. The location of NS Mayport really is fantastic. The one thing I cannot comment on is the school district as I did not have school-aged kids while I was there. Base amenities were great because there are multiple restaurants to choose from on base and even more right off base. There is a small NEX on the base and a large one with a commissary off-base. I would find better grocery deals most of the time at a Publix. I would absolutely live in the area again and highly recommend a tour here if you get the chance.
