The primary mission of Pearl Harbor is to provide berthing and shore side support to surface ships and submarines, as well as maintenance and training. Pearl Harbor can accommodate the largest ships in the fleet, to include dry dock services, and is now home to over 160 commands. Housing, personnel, and family support are also provided and are an integral part of the shore side activities, which encompass both permanent and transient personnel. NCTAMS PAC provides operational direction and management to all Pacific Naval Telecommunication System users. In addition to this function, NCTAMS PAC manages, operates, and maintains the Defense Communication System and Naval Telecommunication System assets. It also offers a full range of ADP and Information Resource Services, Maintenance and Repair, and Communication/Electronic and Defense Message System coordination to the Navy and other DOD activities in the Pacific.

JBPHH is massive and has tons of great amenities. While stationed there I lived in both base housing and off-base on the west side of the Island. Base housing options were fine and at the time I lived there they were offering discounted rent prices so you would still make money from BAH while living in base housing. If you live off-base just keep in mind that utilities are crazy expensive in Hawaii and traffic is an absolute nightmare depending on where you live and where you are going. The beach on the Hickam AFB side is an excellent place to spend an entire day with your feet in the sand. It is right at the end of the runway shared between the base and the Honolulu International Airport. I did not have a school-aged kid while stationed there but my cousin is currently stationed at JBPHH and they said the school district is great. There are tons of local recreation options which are mostly hiking, snorkeling, diving, or just chilling on the beach. If nightlife is your thing I recommend a condo downtown/Waikiki area. You would be going against traffic to get to work and against it going home for work. The worst place to live strictly because of traffic is probably on the west side of the island. What would normally take you 25 minutes to get to work would take you 2 hours in the morning and about the same in the evening. Parking is tough no matter where you are and the parking spots/lanes on the road are narrow. I recommend having a smaller vehicle while on the island. I gave the local community 4 stars because some of the locals are still upset about white people taking over their island and forcing them to join the United States. Most areas are pretty safe but if you are in an area that is heavily populated with locals then they may start speaking their minds to you and it is not pleasant. Housing options were given 4 stars because a lot of the newer more Americanized housing options are on the west side of the island which just means you have to deal with the horrendous traffic if you live out that way.
