The National Guard continues its historic dual mission, providing trained units to the states, territories and the District of Columbia and keeping itself equipped to protect life and property. The Guard also provides trained units to the nation equipped and ready to defend the United States and its interests all over the globe.

117 ARW

The Air National Guard’s federal mission is to maintain well-trained, well-equipped units available for prompt mobilization during war and provide assistance during national emergencies (such as natural disasters or civil disturbances). During peacetime, the combat-ready units and support units are assigned to most Air Force major commands to carry out missions compatible with training, mobilization readiness, humanitarian and contingency operations such as Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. 

161 ARW

The Air National Guard (ANG) is administered by the National Guard Bureau, a joint bureau of the departments of the Army and Air Force, and is the principal organization in Washington, D.C. that operates on behalf of the 54 states and territories of the National Guard (NG), working to ensure the almost half-a-million NG Soldiers and Airmen are trained and resourced to meet the needs of our Nation and the various governors in times of war and domestic emergency.

162 Wing

The 187th Fighter Wing, a part of the Alabama Air National Guard, includes a squadron of F-16 fighter jets, a combat communications group, an RC-26 reconnaissance aircraft squadron, and an eagle vision unit.  The wing's 100th Fighter Squadron is descended from the 100th Fighter Squadron of the "Redtails", the Tuskegee Airmen who distinguished themselves with their bravery and heroism during World War II. The tails of some of the 100FS F-16 aircraft are painted red today to remember and pay tribute to that heritage.

187 FW

The ready, elite Airmen of the 188th Wing provide 24/7 actionable intelligence, MQ-9 operations, agile combat support, training for joint and international partners and execute those same missions along with Domestic Response and Expeditionary Medicine at home and deployed, in support of State and National objectives.
